Regardless if one lives in the rural areas or in one of our urban areas, driving in our state can be perilous. After all, much of our country’s goods are transported through our state, and we have the most populous city in the nation here as well. Unfortunately, this means that fatal accidents, like the one recently on I-287 in Rye Brook, are all too common.
Fatal multi-car crash
According to New York State Police, at around 8:30 a.m. Thursday morning, there was a multi-car crash. The accident involved several vehicles and a cement truck and, at least, two people have died as a result. While details are still unclear, the accident occurred in Rye Brook, near exits 10 and 11 near mile marker 9.5.
Though, from the videos of the aftermath, it is clear that a serious accident occurred, but not clear how it happened. From arial shots, one can tell the outlines of vehicles, but the scene is truly horrific. As a result of the fatal collisions, traffic was rerouted to the Purchase/Port Chester exit, exit 10.
After an auto accident
For our Albany, New York, readers and readers throughout New York, as this accident makes clear, car crashes can have serious, deadly consequences. This is true for the victims themselves and their surviving family members. Indeed, even if an accident victim is killed, the surviving family members can still file a wrongful death lawsuit against the negligent party (or parties, depending on the facts). They can get compensation for their loss, including their pain and suffering, funeral costs, medical costs, loss wages and even the loss of affection.
For the victims themselves, should they survive, they too have legal options. Through a personal injury lawsuit, they can hold the negligent party responsible for their costs and pain and suffering. And, depending on the facts of the case, the family may still be able to sue the negligent party as well. New York law is clear. These matters are serious, and accident victims have the right to seek civil justice.
